TREATMENT APPROACH

Whereas my core philosophy of patient care integrates second- and third-wave cognitive-behavioral treatment models with family systems and object relations constructs, I practice an empathic, collaborative, and compassionate approach to assessment and treatment within the context of a confidential and supportive environment that emphasizes individual and family strengths. While diagnostic assessment is an important springboard for therapy, I focus on identifying the underlying psychological processes (also known as "mechanisms") that seem to be driving and maintaining patients' problems. Based on our collective understanding of these mechanisms and individual patient needs, I integrate clinical interventions from the evidence-based treatments in which I am trained to best target presenting problems and symptoms and reduce suffering. As patients gradually develop a more balanced view of themselves, build self-compassion and confidence, and practice skills learned in naturalistic settings, they are able to improve functioning and achieve meaningful and lasting positive changes to enhance their overall quality of living. Ongoing progress monitoring, skills coaching, and support, together with encouragement of patient/family feedback and collaboration with other team members (e.g., psychiatrists, social workers), inform continual adjustments to the treatment plan that facilitate overall improvement and increased likelihood for success in achieving identified goals.

INITIAL EVALUATION
I begin with an initial telephone conversation to briefly discuss your current concerns and collectively decide to schedule an appointment based on your needs and my expertise. I will ask you to complete several forms prior to the evaluation, which will provide me with valuable information that expedites the assessment process and allows us to use session time more effectively. This generally takes one to two 50- to 80-minute sessions (additional sessions may be needed for more complex issues), and may include relevant family members (e.g., parents, significant others). For individuals transitioning out of inpatient and residential treatment settings, it is helpful to have patient records at the time of the initial appointment. At the conclusion of the evaluation process, I will discuss pertinent diagnostic issues and treatment plan recommendations with you, and together we will develop an initial plan with mutually agreed-upon goals.
PSYCHOTHERAPY
I provide psychotherapy services to adolescent and adult individuals, families, and couples. Depending on patients' needs and treatment goals, sessions usually are scheduled once to twice weekly, with other arrangements as needed. Services for adolescents typically include collateral work with parents/caregivers, school personnel, paraprofessional staff, and other key individuals, though this varies according to individualized treatment plans. I collaborate with other clinicians and related professionals, as well as with psychiatrists who specialize in clarifying complex diagnostic issues and psychopharmacological treatments, in order to provide the most effective and comprehensive care for my patients.
SKILLS TRAINING
An important aspect of therapy involves learning new skills (e.g., mindfulness, emotion regulation, social skills) to resolve presenting problems and more effectively navigate life challenges. In addition to integrating a broad range of skills training with other clinical interventions, I offer individual DBT skills training and coaching to patients who may not be able to attend traditional group formats. I also offer parenting skills training within the context of my work with adolescents, as well as for individuals seeking that stand-alone service.
CONSULTATION & TRAINING
I provide diagnostic and treatment consultation to other clinicians, as well as for patients directly, in situations where the existing response to therapy is less than optimal, such as when progress stalls and individuals are not moving toward desirable outcomes. I also consult with school personnel to address developmental and educational issues for emotionally disturbed youth, and am available to provide recommendations for Student Success Teams and Individualized Education Plans. I work with parents, caregivers, and schools to develop behavior modification plans to reduce risk and enhance overall functioning at home, school, and in the community. I am happy to meet with you to discuss your individual, organizational, and/or staff needs, and to develop training workshops and presentations to enhance understanding, skill level, and productivity. In addition to a wide range of mental health issues, topics may include diagnosis and treatment of emotional and behavioral disorders, dealing with trauma, conflict resolution, stress reduction, parenting skills enhancement, and adolescent development.
FEES
Please note that I do not participate on insurance company or other third-party payor panels. At your request, however, I am happy to provide you with a monthly invoice that you may submit for reimbursement from your insurance company. I currently do not accept credit cards, and payment is expected at the time of service unless other arrangements are made in advance.
